OUR NEWS

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Homework is expected to be completed every night.

Homework is a critical part of our math class. A student's homework lets us at school know if they are fully understanding what we teach them in the classroom. If a student is able to do their homework without the help of classmates or teachers, then we can see that they are working toward mastering the concepts that we are working on in the classroom

We generally give some type of assessment on Friday mornings. Assessments can be anything from a test, quiz, 3-question check, activity, project, etc. and let us know who understands, who doesn't, and who is in between. Our assessments include what we have been focusing on in class as well as anything else that has been taught throughout the year, which is a review.

Tests, quizzes, and/or quick checks

Students are also expected to be able to use a ruler and measure in inches and centimeters. They will learn how to measure to the nearest inch, 1/2 inch, 1/4 inch, and 1/8 inch.

Students DO NOT need to be able to measure to the nearest 1/16.

Gearing up for SOLs

April 28-May 2, 2014

On Monday and Tuesday of this week, students will take a practice SOL to begin preparing students for the math SOL on Wednesday, May 21st and Thursday, May 22nd.

On Tuesday the teachers will review how students did on the practice SOL and reteach any items/concepts that were missed during math on Wedneday-Friday.

From speaking with students, they feel that the most difficult concepts are: long division, two-digit multiplication, word problems, and converting measurements

Review for SOLs

May 12-16,2014

Last week during our weekly assessment, we noticed that students were making mistakes on their computation (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). Because of that, we have given basic computation for homework this week.  Computation will be the first half of the SOL and students will not have access to a calculator for these items.

We are stressing that the students use grid paper when doing any addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division because grid paper helps them to stay organized so that place values are not accidentally misplaced. Please watch the daily videos so that students are able to remember how to get through each form of computation.
